Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!

Spetember 15 - October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to recognize Latino people's extraordinary history and contributions to art, music, and literature.

Chicago kicked off the month on September 11 with a Mexican Independence Parade in Little Village, and there will continue to be events around the city through the end of the month.

Can't make it to any events? Celebrate by reading a book by a Latino author! You can find all of these books in the Roosevelt library:

Before We Were Free, by Julia Alvarez Call Number: FIC ALV C.1 BK

12-year-old Anita de Torre comes of age in the Dominican Republic during the 1960s, when the country was under the brutal reign of dictator Trujillo.

The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros Call Number: FIC CIS

Esperanza Cordero tells her story of growing up in a Mexican neighborhood in Chicago.

One Book, One Chicago

This fall's selection for the "One Book, One Chicago" event is Saul Bellow's "The Adventures of Augie March". Bellow grew up in Chicago and won the Nobel Prize for literature. This novel is set primarily in Chicago of the 20's-40's and follows Augie through the streets of Chicago as he grows into adulthood. There will be different events planned all over the city in conjunction with this novel: lectures, book groups, etc. The book is available in all public libraries and should be a great read. Welcome back Roosevelt Rough Riders!! Hopefully you had restful and fulfilling summer vacations and are now ready for the new year!! Library patrons will jump for joy when they see the new wood floor! It is such a change from the orange carpet. We have many new initiatives planned for the year including a writing club, a reading club, this blog! where we hope you'll write book reviews and share insights about your RHS experience, our annual Halloween readathon, a return engagement by author and RHS graduate Kenneth Green, and many other activities.
